8TH GRADE SCIENCE

2020-2021 Syllabus

COURSE SCOPE

 

This class is an integrated course that continues the program begun in the 6th and 7th grades.  Topics covered will include cells and heredity, human body systems, and matter and energy.

 

COURSE GOALS

 

By the end of this course, students will be able to do the following:

 

  1. Identify cell structures and their purpose.

 

  1. Be able to explain the roles of genes and chromosomes in heredity.

 

  1. Compare asexual and sexual reproduction.

 

  1. Discuss the differences in human body systems and how they interact.

 

  1. Compare parts of the atom and classes of elements.

 

  1. Recognize physical and chemical changes in matter.

 

  1. Use the scientific method and laboratory skills such as observation, measurement, and analysis during science experiments.

 

TEXT

 

Students will be using new texts in a workbook format published by Holt McDougal.  Each student will have his/her own text to serve as a reading source and workbook.

 

 

 

 

 

GRADING POLICY

 

 Students will receive grades for homework assignments, lab work, participating in active reading activities, their science notebooks, and tests.  Tests, of course, will be worth more points than most assignments.

 

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

 

Classroom rules include:

  • Treat everyone with respect and courtesy.
  • Come to class prepared with appropriate materials and a good attitude.
  • Do not do anything that will interfere with the learning process for anyone including you.
  • Turn in your work on time, neatly done and complete.
  • Follow instructions and all safety rules.

 

 

Students are expected to avoid the necessity of leaving the classroom to go to the restroom or locker during class time.  Students will enter the classroom quietly, be ready to work immediately and remain seated until dismissed.  Food and drink are not allowed in the classroom.  Cell phone use will not be allowed during class.

 

Since this is a science class, there will be additional rules in regard to safety issues during lab.  Students who break these rules will most likely lose the privilege of participating in future lab activities.
